The city of rutland is the seat of rutland county, vermont, united states. As of the 2010 census, the city had a total population of 16,495. It is located approximately 65 miles east of the new york state line. Rutland is the third largest city in the state of vermont after burlington and south burlington. The racial makeup of the city was 95.9% white, 0.8% african american, 0.3% native american, 0.8% asian, 0.1% pacific islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
